Final days for restriction proposals for tattoo inks by ECHA

The ECHA (European Chemicals Agency) are in the final phase of accepting comments and proposals for restrictions on the ingredients and allowed levels of ingredients in tattoo inks.

Current comments are available for download although personal details of contributors are omitted.

There’s going to be quite a big change in the allowed chemicals/metals allowed in tattoo inks in the EU, the restriction of certain chemicals and the lowering of allowed levels of ingredients means tattoo ink manufacturers are going to have to go back to the drawing board and change formulae for their inks to be legal in the EU.  Reading the comments it seems white pigments may be the hardest hit because of the concentration levels of lead present in them, one contributor went so far as to say there currently isn’t a white on the market that meets the proposed standards, something to think about.
